Travel
The Autonomous Community of Extremadura lies in the South-west of the Iberian Peninsula and is made up of the two largest provinces in Spain: Cáceres and Badajoz. The city of Cáceres is 2 and a half hours from Madrid and Lisbon.
Cáceres doesn't have an airport, although flying is still the quickest way to get to the city. The best option is usually to fly to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport and catch a train from the Madrid-Atocha Cercanías to Cáceres city centre. Depending on which terminal you arrive at, you can either directly take the Cercanías commuter train at Terminal T4 (about 30 minutes to Atocha train station) or take a free shuttle bus from terminals T1-T3 to get to T4. Take the Cercanías train to Atocha. Once in Atocha, make your way to the Renfe Media Distancia platform (not AVE) and check which platform the train is in on your day of departure (it usually alternates between platforms 3 and 6). The train journey takes from 3 hours and 7 minutes to 4 hours and 15 minutes. You can also take the Cercanias train in T4 to Mendez-Alvaro station directly, which is right below and connected to the Estación Sur de Autobuses de Madrid (South Station) where many national bus lines depart from. The bus to Cáceres is operated by Avanzabus. The bus journey is about 4 hours including rest stops. There is also a daily bus departing from Terminal T4 at 11.00 a.m. and T1 at 11.20 a.m. to Cáceres (approx. a 5-hour trip, stopping in Navalmoral de la Mata and Trujillo before arriving to Cáceres).
